About Charlie Rhodes

Charles Anderson "Dusty" Rhodes was a right-handed pitcher whose brief major-league career spanned 1906 to 1909, all in the National League. Born April 7, 1885, in Caney, Kansas, he climbed through the minors with a string of clubs — Parsons, Trenton, Omaha, Little Rock, Chattanooga, Fort Worth, Austin, and Galveston — and it was during his 1907 stint with the Trenton Tigers that Sporting Life hung the nickname "Dusty" on him. He debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals on July 26, 1906, went 3-4 as a rookie, and after a brief 1908 turn with the Cincinnati Reds returned to St. Louis, where he made his final big-league appearance on June 14, 1909. Over three seasons he compiled a modest 7-11 record with a respectable 3.46 ERA, 76 strikeouts, and 10 complete games across 26 games (143 innings). Rhodes never reached stardom and is one of the T206 set's obscure common subjects, appearing in the 350-only series. He died young, at 33, on October 26, 1918, back home in Caney, Kansas, and is buried there in Sunnyside Cemetery.
