About Christy Mathewson

Christy Mathewson attended Bucknell University before signing his first pro contract with Taunton of the New England League, and made his major-league debut for the New York Giants on July 17, 1900, at age 19. A right-handed pitcher famous for his "fadeaway" (an early screwball), he starred for the Giants from 1900 through 1916 and finished his playing days with Cincinnati in 1916. Over 17 seasons he went 373-188 (.665) with a 2.13 ERA and 79 shutouts, threw no-hitters in 1901 and 1905, and won 30-plus games three straight years (1903-1905), peaking at 37 wins in 1908. His signature feat came in the 1905 World Series, when he blanked the Philadelphia Athletics with three complete-game shutouts in six days as the Giants took the title. Nicknamed "Big Six" (a sportswriter's nod to a famed New York fire company) and hailed as "The Christian Gentleman," Mathewson later served in WWI, where gas exposure worsened the tuberculosis that killed him in 1925. In 1936 he was elected to the Hall of Fame in its inaugural class. He is one of the T206 set's marquee, most-coveted Hall-of-Fame subjects.
