About Doc White
Guy Harris "Doc" White was a slender left-handed pitcher and one of the deadball era's finest control artists. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1879, he pitched at Georgetown and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1901 while completing a dentistry degree, which he earned in 1902 and practiced in the offseason, giving him his lasting nickname "Doc." After two seasons in Philadelphia (1901-1902), he jumped to the Chicago White Sox, where he spent the rest of his career (1903-1912). White was the ace of the 1906 "Hitless Wonders" world champions, beating the crosstown Cubs 8-3 in the clinching Game 5 of the World Series; that year he also led the American League with a 1.52 ERA. In September 1904 he threw five consecutive shutouts, a scoreless-innings feat that stood as a record until Don Drysdale tied it in 1968. In 1907 he tied for the AL lead with 27 wins. White finished 189-156 with a 2.39 ERA and 1,384 strikeouts over 13 seasons. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
