About Zack Wheat

Zachariah Davis "Buck" Wheat was born in 1888 near Hamilton, Missouri, and worked his way to the majors through minor-league stops in Fort Worth, Shreveport, and Mobile before Brooklyn purchased his contract late in 1909. The graceful left-handed-hitting left fielder then became the greatest position player in early Dodgers history, playing for the Brooklyn Superbas/Robins from 1909 through 1926 and finishing with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1927. Wheat won the 1918 National League batting title at .335 — famously without hitting a single home run that season — and helped Brooklyn to NL pennants in 1916 and 1920, though the club lost both World Series. Adapting seamlessly to the livelier ball, he hit .375 in both 1923 and 1924 and .359 at age 37 in 1925. He retired with a .317 career average and 2,884 hits, remaining the franchise's all-time leader in hits, doubles, triples, and total bases. Long overlooked, "Buck" Wheat was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1959. His T206 card is a coveted Hall of Fame subject in the set.
