About Ed Killian

Edwin Henry "Twilight Ed" Killian was a left-handed pitcher born November 12, 1876, in Racine, Wisconsin, to German immigrant parents. He signed his first pro contract with Rockford of the Three-I League in 1902 and reached the majors with Cleveland in 1903 before spending the heart of his career with the Detroit Tigers (1904-1910). Relying on a sinking fastball to induce groundballs rather than strikeouts, Killian was a two-time 20-game winner, going 23-14 with a league-leading eight shutouts in 1905 and 25-13 with a 1.78 ERA in 1907. He posted a career 102-78 record with a superb 2.38 ERA, and anchored Detroit's staff during its three straight American League pennants (1907-1909), though the Tigers lost all three World Series. His nickname "Twilight Ed" came from his habit of pitching extra-inning games into the fading evening darkness. He is best remembered for his extreme stinginess with the home run, once going from September 1903 to August 1907 - roughly 1,001 innings - without allowing one, and surrendering just nine homers in his entire career. Killian died of cancer in Detroit on July 18, 1928, at age 51; owner Frank Navin later called him the finest left-hander ever to wear a Detroit uniform. He is not a Hall of Famer, and his card is a common but genuine deadball-era Tiger from the T206 set's Detroit run.
