About Hughie Jennings

Signed out of the Pennsylvania coal country, Hugh Ambrose Jennings broke into pro ball in 1890 and reached the majors with Louisville in 1891. Traded to Ned Hanlon's Baltimore Orioles, he became the finest shortstop of the 1890s, anchoring the rowdy, inner-game clubs that won three straight National League championships (1894-96) while he batted .335, .386, and a career-best .401 in 1896. A fearless plate-crowder, he was hit by pitches a record 51 times in 1896 and 287 times in his career, marks that still stand. He later moved to first base with Brooklyn and Philadelphia, finishing at .312 with 1,526 hits. As Detroit's manager (1907-1920) he guided the young Ty Cobb to three consecutive American League pennants (1907-09), though the Tigers lost all three World Series. Nicknamed "Ee-Yah" for the shrill cry he bellowed from the third-base coaching box, the grass-plucking, leg-kicking Jennings was the deadball era's most animated field boss. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1945. A Hall-of-Fame subject, Jennings is one of the T206 set's marquee names.
