About Ed Lennox
James Edgar "Eggie" Lennox came off the sandlots of Camden and Gloucester, New Jersey, and signed with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in July 1906, though he saw only brief big-league action before returning to the minors. A third baseman who also played second, he earned his most substantial major-league opportunity with the Brooklyn Superbas of the National League in 1909-1910, winning the starting third-base job with steady hitting and glovework; in 1909 he led the majors in fielding percentage among third basemen (.959). He batted around .262 and .259 in those two Brooklyn seasons, then starred in the minors, hitting .331 for Louisville of the American Association in 1911. After a 1912 stint with the Chicago Cubs, he jumped to the Pittsburgh Rebels of the Federal League (1914-1915), his best campaign coming in 1914 when he batted .312, the eighth-highest average in that circuit. His documented nickname was "Eggie." Lennox never reached a World Series and is not in the Hall of Fame; he was largely a career minor-leaguer who later managed, umpired, and scouted. As a common Brooklyn subject in the celebrated T206 set, his card is an affordable dead-ball-era piece rather than a scarce star.
