About Jake Beckley

A native of Hannibal, Missouri, Jake Beckley broke into pro ball in 1886 with Leavenworth of the Western League and was sold to Pittsburgh in 1888, launching a 20-year major-league career at first base. A left-handed slugger, he starred for the Pittsburgh Alleghenys/Pirates (including the 1890 Players League Burghers), New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and St. Louis Cardinals from 1888 to 1907. Beckley hit .308 lifetime with 2,938 hits and 1,581 RBI, batting .300 or better in 13 of his 20 seasons, and retired as baseball's all-time leader in triples; his 244 three-baggers still rank fourth in history. Nicknamed "Eagle Eye" for his keen batting skill, he held the career record for games at first base until Eddie Murray passed him in 1994 and still leads all first basemen in putouts. The T206 card catches him past his MLB days with the Kansas City club of the American Association (1907-1910). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971.
