About Matty McIntyre

Matthew Martin "Matty" McIntyre, born June 12, 1880 near Stonington, Connecticut, signed out of the New England League and reached the majors with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in their inaugural 1901 season, debuting July 3. A left-handed-hitting left fielder prized for his defense, base running, and bunting, he found his lasting home with the Detroit Tigers (1904-1910), where he served as leadoff man ahead of Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford in one of the deadball era's finest outfields. McIntyre peaked in 1908, leading the American League with 105 runs and reaching base 258 times (.392 OBP); he had earlier topped the AL with 29 stolen bases in 1906. He was the leadoff hitter on Detroit's pennant winners of 1907, 1908 and 1909, though a 1907 broken ankle and 1909 appendicitis limited him in the World Series. Traded to the Chicago White Sox, he hit a career-best .323 in 1911. Over ten big-league seasons he batted .269 with 1,066 hits in 1,072 games. He died April 2, 1920, at 39 of Bright's disease. A "350 Only" subject, he appears on numerous T206 backs.
