About Gus Mancuso
Gus Mancuso, born December 5, 1905, in Galveston, Texas, was a right-handed catcher whose sturdy defense and pitcher-handling made him one of the National League's premier receivers of the 1930s. Discovered by the Houston Buffaloes and developed through the Cardinals' farm system, he debuted with St. Louis in 1928 and won a World Series title with the Cardinals in 1931. Traded to the Giants in 1933 - a deal manager Bill Terry credited with turning New York from a sixth-place club into pennant winners - Mancuso caught Carl Hubbell during his dominant 1.66-ERA season and helped the Giants beat the Senators in that year's World Series. Known as "Blackie" for his dark complexion, he was a two-time All-Star (1935, 1937) and caught five future Hall of Famers, including Hubbell, Dizzy Dean, and Grover Cleveland Alexander, over a 17-year career spanning seven teams. He finished with a .265 average, 1,194 hits, 53 home runs, and 543 RBI in 1,460 games. After retiring in 1945, he worked as a pitching coach, minor-league manager, and radio broadcaster alongside Harry Caray, and was later inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
