About Hal Schumacher
Harold Henry "Prince Hal" Schumacher was born November 23, 1910, in Hinckley, New York, and died April 21, 1993. A standout at St. Lawrence University, he was signed by New York Giants scout Art Devlin (acting for manager John McGraw) in 1931 and spent his entire career with the club, debuting that April and earning a permanent rotation spot by 1932. The right-hander broke through in 1933, going 19-9 with a 2.16 ERA as the Giants won the National League pennant and the World Series; 1934 was his best season, with 23 wins. He finished 158-121 with a 3.36 ERA and 906 strikeouts over 391 games (1931-1942, 1946, with 1942-1945 lost to Navy service), and was a two-time All-Star (1933, 1935). Across three World Series (1933, 1936, 1937) he went 2-2, highlighted by a Game 2 complete-game win over Washington in 1933 and a ten-inning Game 5 win over the Yankees in 1936 in which he struck out Hall of Famers DiMaggio, Gehrig, and Dickey in succession with the bases loaded. His nickname, "Prince Hal," paired him with staff ace Carl Hubbell's "King Carl" on the Giants' pennant-winning 1930s clubs. Afterward he became a Little League advocate and Adirondack Bat Company vice president.
