1952 Topps #400 Bill Dickey

About Bill Dickey
Bill Dickey (1907-1993) signed out of Arkansas semipro and minor-league ball and reached the majors when the New York Yankees purchased his contract in 1928, debuting that August. A left-handed-hitting catcher, he spent his entire 17-season career (1928-1943, 1946) in pinstripes, batting .313 with 1,969 hits, 202 home runs and 1,209 RBI. An 11-time All-Star, he hit a career-best .362 in 1936, the highest single-season average by a catcher until Joe Mauer's .365 in 2009, and he caught at least 100 games for 13 straight seasons. Dickey anchored seven World Series champions (1932, 1936-1939, 1941, 1943), delivering the title-clinching home run in the 1943 Series. He served as the Yankees' player-manager in 1946, then returned as a coach who mentored young Yogi Berra into a top defensive catcher; the club retired No. 8 for both men in 1972. Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954, Dickey appears in the 1952 Topps set as a Yankees coach on card #400, part of the scarce, seldom-printed high-number series (#311-407) that makes these cards prized by collectors today.
