About Bob Addis
Robert Gordon Addis (November 6, 1925 - November 15, 2016) was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who signed with the New York Yankees organization in 1943, then interrupted his career to serve in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in 1944-45. After several more minor-league seasons he reached the majors with the Boston Braves on September 1, 1950, and went on to appear in 208 big-league games over four seasons (1950-53) for three National League clubs: the Braves, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He enjoyed his finest year in 1952 as a Cub - the team shown on this rookie card - batting a career-best mark while collecting 86 hits in 93 games. For his career he hit .281 with 150 hits, 22 doubles, 2 home runs, and 47 RBI. Addis is best remembered for a controversial play in the tight 1951 pennant race, when he slid home safely under Roy Campanella's tag on Earl Torgeson's grounder; umpire Frank Dascoli's call so enraged the Dodgers that Campanella was ejected, in a game that helped force the storied Giants-Dodgers playoff won by Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World." In 1953 he was dealt to Pittsburgh in the massive ten-player trade headlined by slugger Ralph Kiner, and he played his final MLB game that June 6. After baseball, Addis became a history teacher and athletic director at Euclid High School in Ohio for 34 years before retiring in 1993. This is Series 5, mid-set card in the landmark 1952 Topps issue.
