About Pete Castiglione
Pete Castiglione was a versatile infielder who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 1940 and worked his way up through minor-league stops at Carthage, Hutchinson, Moultrie, and Harrisburg. His path was interrupted by two years of World War II service in the U.S. Navy, where he rose to Chief Radioman aboard the destroyer escort USS Crouter and the oiler USS Ponaganset, seeing action across the Pacific from the Solomon Islands and New Guinea through the Philippines and Okinawa. Born February 13, 1921, in Greenwich, Connecticut, he made his major-league debut with the Pirates on September 10, 1947, at age 26. Over eight big-league seasons (1947-1954) he played mostly third base and shortstop but also filled in at second, first, and the outfield, spending most of his career in Pittsburgh before a mid-1953 trade sent him to the St. Louis Cardinals, with whom he finished in 1954. A steady contact hitter and reliable glove, he batted .255 with 426 hits, 24 home runs, and 150 RBI across 545 games, and twice led National League third basemen in range factor per nine innings (1951 and 1953). After baseball he worked for decades as a mail carrier and died in 2010. This card appears in the fifth series of the landmark 1952 Topps set, well ahead of the famously scarce high-number run (#311-407, headlined by the Mickey Mantle #311) that makes the set's final cards so coveted today.
