About Faye Throneberry
Maynard Faye Throneberry (June 22, 1931 - April 26, 1999) was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Fisherville, Tennessee, who signed with Boston Red Sox scout George Digby in June 1950 after the commissioner voided an earlier Detroit Tigers contract. He tore up the minors at Scranton, batting .304 with 13 home runs in 1951, and made his major-league debut with the Red Sox on April 15, 1952 - the same season Topps issued this card. His rookie year was interrupted by a two-year U.S. Army stint that included service in Korea, and he returned to play for the Red Sox (1952, 1955-57), Washington Senators (1957-60) and Los Angeles Angels (1961). Over eight seasons and 521 games he batted .236 with 29 home runs and 137 RBI, with his best year coming in 1959 when he set career highs of 10 homers and 82 hits for Washington. He is best remembered today as the older brother of "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry, the beloved 1962 Mets folk hero. After baseball Faye became a respected bird dog trainer, handling the pointer Miller's Miss Knight to a national field-trial championship in 1973. As card #376, his rookie card falls within the coveted high-number series (#311-407) of the 1952 Topps set - the scarce final run, printed in far smaller quantities and famously dumped into the Atlantic, that makes these cards prized by collectors today.
