About Ace Parker
Clarence "Ace" Parker did everything for Duke's backfield in the mid-1930s — run, pass, punt, kick and defend — earning second-team All-America notice in 1935 and consensus first-team honors in 1936, when he captained the Blue Devils to a 9-1 record. His 105-yard kickoff return against North Carolina still stands as a Duke record. Parker planned on a baseball life, signing with the Philadelphia Athletics as a shortstop, but joined the NFL's Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937 and became one of the league's great all-around backs. In 1940 he was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player despite starting the season in a ten-pound brace over an ankle broken in a summer baseball game. After wartime service he closed with the Boston Yanks in 1945 and the AAFC's New York Yankees in 1946, then returned to Durham as Duke's longtime baseball coach. A 1955 College Football Hall of Fame and 1972 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Parker lived to 101, the first Pro Football Hall of Famer to reach 100.
