About Sid Luckman

Sid Luckman came out of Brooklyn to star in Columbia's backfield in the late 1930s, completing 180 of 376 passes for 2,413 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Lions. A second-team All-American in 1937 and a first-team choice in 1938, he finished third in that year's Heisman Trophy voting behind Davey O'Brien and Marshall Goldberg. The Chicago Bears took him second overall in 1939, and Luckman became the first great quarterback of the modern T formation, piloting Chicago to NFL championships in 1940, 1941, 1943 and 1946 — a run that opened with the 73-0 rout of Washington in the 1940 title game. In 1943 he was named league MVP and threw seven touchdown passes against the Giants on "Sid Luckman Day" at the Polo Grounds, a mark still tied for the NFL single-game record. Five times All-NFL, he later served the Bears as a coach and executive. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1960 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965.
