About Frank Sinkwich

Frank Sinkwich, born in Croatia and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, became the first Heisman Trophy winner from the Southeastern Conference as Georgia's tailback in 1942. Toughness made his legend: he broke his jaw early in the 1941 season, played on in a custom face mask, then closed the year in the Orange Bowl by piling up 382 total yards against TCU, rushing for 139 and passing for 243 with three touchdown throws. As a senior he rolled up an SEC-record 2,187 yards of total offense, earned unanimous All-America honors, and claimed the Heisman for Wally Butts's Bulldogs. The Detroit Lions made him the first overall pick of the 1943 NFL draft, and he was named the league's most valuable player in 1944 before wartime service and a knee injury cut his career short. Sinkwich was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
