About Joe Alexander
Joe "Doc" Alexander anchored the Syracuse line from 1916 through 1920, earning All-America honors three straight years, with consensus selections in 1918 and 1919 and a first-team nod in 1920, all while completing his medical degree on campus. Medicine never slowed his football. Alexander built a practice as a lung specialist in New York, founding one of the city's pioneering tuberculosis clinics, yet still suited up in the NFL on weekends, first for the Rochester Jeffersons from 1921 to 1924. When the New York Giants organized in 1925, he became the new franchise's first signing, and he ran the club as player-coach in 1926 before retiring after the 1927 season. Syracuse honors him with the Joseph Alexander Award, created in 1954 for players who excel in football, scholarship and citizenship, the same year he entered the College Football Hall of Fame.
