About Bill Glynn

A left-handed first baseman from Sussex, New Jersey, William Vincent Glynn served as a U.S. Army infantryman in Italy during World War II and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1946 upon his discharge. After several strong minor-league seasons, he reached the majors with a brief eight-game call-up to the Phillies in September 1949, then spent the bulk of his career with the Cleveland Indians (1952-1954). Over four MLB seasons and 310 games he batted .249 with 170 hits, 10 home runs, and 56 RBI. His defining moment came on July 5, 1954, at Detroit, when he blasted three home runs (opening with a grand slam) and drove in seven runs in his first three at-bats, coming up in the eighth with the bases loaded and a chance at a fourth. That season Cleveland won an AL-record 111 games and reached the World Series, where Glynn appeared as the Giants swept the Indians, doubling in Game 3. After baseball he settled in California; the back of this card carries an uncorrected error, listing his birth date incorrectly (it should read July 30, 1925).
