About Hal Newhouser
Signed by scout Wish Egan out of Detroit's Wilbur Wright High School and American Legion ball in 1938, left-hander Hal Newhouser reached the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 1939 and pitched 17 seasons, spending 1939-1953 with Detroit before finishing with the Cleveland Indians (1954-1955), the team shown on this 1955 Topps card. A multiple-time All-Star through the 1940s, he became the first pitcher to win back-to-back MVP Awards, taking the American League honor in both 1944 (a 29-win season) and 1945, when he claimed the pitching Triple Crown with 25 wins, a 1.81 ERA, and 212 strikeouts. That autumn he closed out the 1945 World Series over the Cubs, winning Game 7 with a complete-game 9-3 victory and 10 strikeouts. With Cleveland he reinvented himself as a reliever, helping the record-setting 1954 Indians reach the World Series. Nicknamed "Prince Hal" for his composed bearing and "Hurricane Hal" for his fiery mound temper, he finished 207-150 with a 3.06 ERA and 1,796 strikeouts, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1992.
