About Jim Hegan
Signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1938 out of his native Lynn, Massachusetts, catcher Jim Hegan (1920-1984) reached the majors in September 1941 after four minor-league seasons, then lost 1943-45 to U.S. Coast Guard service in World War II. A light hitter but a peerless defender, he was Cleveland's regular backstop from 1946 through 1957 before finishing with the Tigers, Phillies, Giants, and Cubs (career 1941-42, 1946-60). Hegan was a five-time All-Star (1947, 1949-1952) and the everyday catcher for the 1948 World Series champion Indians, handling a staff that featured Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Early Wynn. He caught three no-hitters -- Don Black (1947), Lemon (1948), and Feller's third (1951). Casey Stengel praised his game-calling ("He's what makes 'em"), and pitcher Herb Score marveled, "He had the best hands I ever saw." Over 1,666 games he batted .228 with 1,087 hits, 92 home runs, and 525 RBI, his value rooted almost entirely in defense. He later coached the Yankees' bullpen, and his son Mike Hegan also became a big-league All-Star.
