1955 Topps #6 Stan Hack
1955 Topps #6 Stan Hack

About Stan Hack
Card #6 pictures Stan Hack as the Chicago Cubs' skipper, but "Smiling Stan" had first been the finest third baseman in the National League. Signed after he hit .352 for the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League in 1931, he was bought by Cubs owner William Veeck Sr. for $40,000 and spent his entire 16-year career (1932-1947) at third base for Chicago. A disciplined left-handed leadoff man, he batted .301 with 2,193 hits, 1,092 walks, and 165 stolen bases, was a five-time All-Star, and twice led the NL in both hits and stolen bases. He reached four World Series (all Cubs losses), hitting .471 in 1938 and delivering a game-winning hit in the 12th inning of Game 6 in 1945. His nickname came from his sunny temperament and a Cubs promotion handing out "Smile with Stan" mirrors to fans. He managed the Cubs from 1954 through 1956, penciling rookie Ernie Banks into the everyday lineup, before later coaching. Hack died in 1979.
