About Bill Tremel

A right-handed relief pitcher, William Leonard "Mumbles" Tremel signed with pro ball as a free agent in 1949 at age 19, breaking in with the Clarksdale Planters of the Cotton States League. He spent six seasons in the minors, winning 21 of 28 decisions with the Shreveport Sports of the Double-A Texas League before the Chicago Cubs purchased his contract in June 1954. Tremel debuted for the Cubs on June 12, 1954, and pitched parts of three seasons (1954-1956), all in Chicago. He earned his first big-league win in 1954 by throwing seven scoreless relief innings against the Milwaukee Braves, then had his best year in 1955, going 3-0 with a 3.72 ERA. Over 57 major-league games he was 4-2 with a 4.05 ERA, 34 strikeouts, and six saves. This 1955 Topps card (#52) is his rookie card. Born in Lilly, Pennsylvania, in 1929, Tremel died in 2013.
