About Howie Pollet

A polished left-handed pitcher, Howard Joseph "Howie" Pollet was born in New Orleans and signed his first professional contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. After a dominant 1941 with the Class A1 Houston Buffaloes (20-3, a 1.16 ERA, and 151 strikeouts), he reached the majors and became a mainstay of the Cardinals' powerhouse teams. Pollet won National League ERA titles in 1943 (1.75) and 1946 (2.10), and his 1946 season was his masterpiece: he led the NL in wins (21), ERA, and innings pitched (266) for the pennant-winning club. A three-time All-Star (1943, 1946, 1949), he added a 20-9, five-shutout campaign in 1949. His career, interrupted by World War II service in the Army Air Forces (1944-45), spanned 14 seasons and also included stops with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago White Sox; his 1955 Topps card (#76) pictures him as a Cub near career's end. Pollet was a World Series champion with the 1942 and 1946 Cardinals and finished 131-116 with a 3.51 ERA and 934 strikeouts. He later served as the Cardinals' pitching coach, including their 1964 championship. He died in 1974.
