About Jim Davis

James Bennett Davis (1924-1995), a switch-hitting, left-handed pitcher out of Red Bluff, California, signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1946 after high school and U.S. Marine Corps service in World War II. He spent roughly eight seasons in the minors, including a long run with the Seattle Rainiers, before the Chicago Cubs brought him to the majors, where he debuted on April 18, 1954. A screwball-and-knuckleball artist, Davis pitched four big-league seasons (1954-1957) for the Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Giants, going 24-26 with a 4.01 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 154 games. His signature moment came on May 27, 1956, when he struck out four Cardinals in a single inning - fanning Hal Smith, Jackie Brandt, and Lindy McDaniel before McDaniel reached on a passed ball/error, then punching out Don Blasingame - making him the first big-league pitcher in roughly 40 years to record four strikeouts in one frame. This 1955 Topps card (#68, Series 1) is his rookie card.
