About Ed Bailey
A left-handed-hitting catcher out of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, Lonas Edgar "Gar" Bailey Jr. signed with the Cincinnati Reds in November 1949 for a reported $35,000 bonus, leaving a basketball scholarship at the University of Tennessee. He reached the majors in 1953 and became the Redlegs' regular catcher in 1955, prized for a strong throwing arm that gunned down roughly half of would-be base-stealers. Over a 14-season career (1953-1966) with the Reds, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Braves, Chicago Cubs and California Angels, Bailey was a six-time All-Star who started the 1956 game and briefly led the National League in hitting that season. He batted .256 with 155 home runs and 540 RBI over 1,212 games, caught Juan Marichal's June 15, 1963 no-hitter, and homered in Game 3 of the 1962 World Series, which the Giants lost to the Yankees in seven games. Nicknamed "Gar" for his middle name Edgar, the outspoken Bailey later served on Knoxville's city council (1983-1995) and died in 2007.
