About Corky Valentine
Harold Lewis "Corky" Valentine (January 4, 1929 - January 21, 2005) was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the Cincinnati Redlegs. Born in Troy, Ohio, he entered pro ball in 1948 in the Cincinnati farm system and, after several years in the low minors, led the 1953 Sally League with a 2.11 ERA and helped the Columbia Reds to the league championship. That earned him a 1954 promotion, and as a rookie he appeared in 36 games (28 starts) with three shutouts; his 12 wins tied for the most on the Redlegs staff. Arm trouble limited him thereafter, and over two big-league seasons (1954-1955) he went 14-12 with a 4.81 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 46 games. This card #44 is his rookie card; its back carries an uncorrected error listing his birth year a year off (it should read 1929). After baseball he became a longtime Atlanta and Fulton County police officer.
