About Bob Borkowski
Bob "Bush" Borkowski was a right-handed outfielder from Dayton, Ohio, signed by the Chicago Cubs (via scout Joe Kernan) in 1946 while he was in the Navy during World War II. Originally a pitcher, he converted to the outfield and hit .376 to win the 1949 Southern Association batting title at Nashville, earning his promotion. He reached the majors with the Cubs in 1950, batting a career-best .273 as a rookie, and spent six big-league seasons (1950-1955) with the Cubs, Cincinnati Redlegs (1952-1955), and Brooklyn Dodgers. A singles-and-doubles hitter, he batted .251 with 294 hits, 16 home runs, and 112 RBI over 470 games. Traded to Brooklyn in June 1955 to help cover for injured Duke Snider, he was with the Dodgers during their only World Series championship season, though he did not appear in that Series. His nickname "Bush" came from Dayton neighbors who couldn't pronounce "Borkowski" and, noting his long blond hair, simply called him Bush. His 1955 Topps card (#74) carries an uncorrected error: the back lists the wrong birth year (it should read 1926).
