About Jack Shepard
Jack Leroy Shepard was a right-handed catcher out of Stanford University, where he earned College All-American honors and captained the first Stanford team to reach the College World Series in 1953. Pirates scout Bob Fontaine signed him as a non-bonus amateur free agent on June 16, 1953, and he debuted in the majors just days later. Shepard spent his entire four-year big-league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1953-1956), batting .260 with 195 hits, 12 home runs, and 75 RBI over 278 games. His finest year was 1954, when he hit .304 and was named the Pirates' Rookie of the Year and a Sporting News all-rookie catcher. On June 1, 1955, he was hurt blocking the plate against Cardinals rookie Ken Boyer at Forbes Field, an injury that set back his career; he retired at 25 to become Stanford's development director and later a Silicon Valley telecommunications executive. His 1955 Topps card (#73) is his rookie card.
