About Preston Ward

Preston Meyer Ward (1927-2013), a 6-foot-4 first baseman out of Columbia, Missouri who attended Missouri State, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1944 at just 16 years old and reached the majors with Brooklyn in 1948. He threw right-handed but batted left, and over nine seasons (1948-1959) he played for the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, and Kansas City Athletics, missing the 1951-52 seasons for military service during the Korean War. Ward came to Pittsburgh in the blockbuster June 1953 ten-player deal that sent Ralph Kiner to the Cubs, and in the Pirates' season finale that September he delivered a walk-off home run into the Forbes Field bleachers to beat the Giants 6-4. He primarily manned first base but also saw time in the outfield and at third. His best year came in 1958, when he hit .284 split between Cleveland and Kansas City. Across 744 games he batted .253 with 522 hits, 50 home runs, and 262 RBI.
