About Bob Skinner
A left-handed-hitting left fielder and first baseman, Robert Ralph "Bob" Skinner was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates (scout Tom Downey) out of semipro ball and reached the majors on April 13, 1954. Card #88 is his rookie card. Over 12 seasons (1954-1966) with the Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and St. Louis Cardinals, he batted .277 with 1,198 hits, 103 home runs, and 531 RBI in 1,381 games. Skinner was a two-time All-Star (1958 and 1960), starting in left field for the National League both years, and hit a career-high .321 for the 1958 Pirates. He won three World Series titles: as a player with the 1960 Pirates (his eighth-inning sacrifice bunt aided the Game 7 rally capped by Bill Mazeroski's walk-off homer) and the 1964 Cardinals, then as hitting coach for the 1979 "We Are Family" Pirates. He later managed the Phillies and Padres, and his son Joel also played in the majors.
