About Joe Frazier

Joseph Filmore "Cobra" Frazier - the ballplayer, not the boxer - was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and pinch-hit specialist signed out of the Class D Bi-State League by the Cleveland organization in 1941, his pro career interrupted by U.S. Coast Guard service in World War II. After a 1947 cup of coffee with Cleveland, he tore up the minors, winning 1953 Texas League Player of the Year honors (.332 with 22 homers and 113 RBI). That earned him a return to the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals (1954-1956), where in 1954 he led the majors with 20 pinch hits and batted .323 as a pinch-hitter for manager Eddie Stanky, who nicknamed him "Cobra." He finished 1956 with Cincinnati and Baltimore, closing a four-season big-league line of .241, 10 home runs, and 45 RBI over 217 games. Frazier later managed the New York Mets (1976-1977), going 86-76 before being replaced by Joe Torre. This is his rookie card.
