About Dick Schofield
A slick-fielding, switch-hitting shortstop from Springfield, Illinois, John Richard Schofield became the St. Louis Cardinals' first "bonus baby," signed in June 1953 for a $40,000 contract by scouts Joe Monahan and Walter Shannon. Bonus rules kept the teenager on the big-league roster, and he went on to play 19 seasons (1953-1971) for seven clubs - the Cardinals, Pirates, Giants, Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Brewers - his glove keeping him in the majors far longer than his .227 average, 21 home runs, and 211 RBI over 1,321 games. His signature season came in 1960: filling in for injured Pittsburgh shortstop Dick Groat, he hit .403 down the stretch, then earned a World Series ring as the Pirates beat the Yankees. Nicknamed "Ducky" (inherited from his father) and also called "Schoy," he founded a baseball family - father of 14-year big-leaguer Dick Schofield Jr. and grandfather of outfielder Jayson Werth. This is not his rookie card (his 1954 Topps is); the card lists his given name, John, as an alias.
