About Rip Repulski

Eldon John "Rip" Repulski was a right-handed outfielder signed to a professional contract by Cardinals scout Walter Shannon and assigned to West Frankfort in the Illinois State League. He reached St. Louis in 1953, taking over as the regular center fielder, playing a career-high 153 games and finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. Over nine major-league seasons (1953-1961) he played for the Cardinals (1953-56), Phillies (1957-58), Dodgers (1959-60) and Red Sox (1960-61), and was named an All-Star in 1956. In 1955 - the year of this card - he set a career high with 23 home runs. For his career he batted .269 with 830 hits, 106 home runs and 416 RBI over 928 games, and won a World Series ring as a backup with the 1959 Los Angeles Dodgers. The nickname "Rip" was pinned on him somewhere in the Cardinals farm system; earlier he had been called "Al." A Sauk Rapids, Minnesota native, he died there in 1993. The card back carries an uncorrected error, listing his birth year incorrectly (he was born in 1928).
