About Ken Boyer
Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1949 as a pitcher before being converted to third base, Ken Boyer reached the majors in 1955 and became the finest third baseman in franchise history. Over 15 seasons (1955-1969) with the Cardinals, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers, he was named to 11 All-Star squads across seven seasons and won five Gold Gloves (1958-1961, 1963). The Cardinals' team captain, Boyer was voted the 1964 National League MVP, batting .295 and leading the league with 119 RBI. That October he starred in the World Series against the Yankees, hitting a pivotal grand slam in Game 4 off Al Downing and homering again in the Cardinals' Game 7 clincher, the same game his brother Clete (a Yankee) also homered. He retired with a .287 average, 2,143 hits, 282 home runs, and 1,141 RBI over 2,034 games, later managing the Cardinals (1978-1980). This is Boyer's rookie card. He died of cancer in 1982 at age 51; St. Louis retired his No. 14 in 1984.
