1955 Topps #137 Harry Elliott

About Harry Elliott
A minor-league hitting machine who reached the majors late, Harry Lewis Elliott (born December 30, 1923, in San Francisco) starred at the University of Minnesota, where he earned three letters each in football and baseball and was named a First-Team All-Big Ten outfielder in 1949. The right-handed-hitting outfielder tore up the minors before breaking through: he led the Evangeline League at .391 in 1951 and won the Pacific Coast League batting title at .350 with San Diego in 1954, earning PCL All-Star honors and compiling a .326 lifetime minor-league average. Acquired by St. Louis, he debuted with the Cardinals on August 1, 1953, and returned in 1955, largely as a pinch-hitter. Across parts of two big-league seasons (1953, 1955) he hit .256 with 2 home runs and 18 RBI over 92 games. This is his rookie card; the back exists with a minor last-line bio variation. After baseball he taught physical education and coached for decades at El Cajon Valley High School.
