About Eddie Stanky
Pictured as St. Louis Cardinals manager, Eddie Stanky was a scrappy second baseman signed into the Philadelphia Athletics chain in 1935 who ground through eight years in the minors before debuting with the Chicago Cubs in 1943 at age 27. Over 11 seasons he played for the Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers (1944-47), Boston Braves (1948-49), New York Giants (1950-51), and Cardinals (1952-53), earning three All-Star nods (1947, 1948, 1950). Though he hit only .268 with 29 home runs, "The Brat" made himself invaluable with a legendary batting eye, drawing a then-NL-record 148 walks in 1945 and leading the league in walks four times; in 1950 he hit .300 and paced the NL with 144 walks and a .460 on-base percentage. Branch Rickey and Leo Durocher summed him up: "He can't hit, can't run, can't field... all he can do is beat you." He reached three World Series (1947 Dodgers, 1948 Braves, 1951 Giants), all losses, and famously kicked the ball from Phil Rizzuto's glove in the 1951 Series; his distracting "Stanky maneuver" prompted a rule change. He also stood up for Jackie Robinson in 1947. Stanky managed the Cardinals from 1952-55 (Manager of the Year, 1952) and later the White Sox (1966-68).

Variations & how to tell them apart
High Number (#161-210)
Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
