About Gene Woodling
Signed out of Akron, Ohio by Cleveland scout Bill Bradley, Gene Woodling turned pro in 1940 and became a four-time minor-league batting champion, capping it as The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year with the 1948 San Francisco Seals (.385). A left-handed-hitting left fielder, he reached the majors in 1943 and played 17 seasons across the Indians, Pirates, Yankees, Orioles, Senators and Mets (1943-1962). His prime came with the New York Yankees, where he was a fixture on five straight World Series champions from 1949 through 1953, batting a stellar .318 in those Fall Classics. Sportswriters dubbed Woodling and right fielder Hank Bauer the "Gold Dust Twins" for their parallel careers. His finest everyday years came in Baltimore, earning his lone All-Star selection in 1959 (.300, 14 HR, 77 RBI). He retired a .284 hitter with 1,585 hits, 147 home runs and 830 RBI over 1,796 games, and was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1992. This #190 is a scarcer high-number (Series 2), picturing him with the Orioles.
