1955 Topps #189 Phil Rizzuto
1955 Topps #189 Phil Rizzuto
Phil Rizzuto, the Yankees' Hall of Fame shortstop - a high number.

About Phil Rizzuto
Phil Rizzuto signed with the New York Yankees and starred in the minors, taking The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year honors in 1940 with the Kansas City Blues before debuting in 1941. A slick-fielding shortstop, he spent his entire 13-season career with the Yankees (1941-42 and 1946-56), losing 1943-45 to World War II military service. A five-time All-Star (1942, 1950-53), Rizzuto won the 1950 AL MVP Award, batting .324 with 200 hits and 125 runs while setting a shortstop record with 238 consecutive errorless chances. He anchored seven World Series champions and appeared in nine Fall Classics in all. He hit .273 with 1,588 hits, 38 home runs, 563 RBI, and 149 stolen bases over 1,661 games. Nicknamed "The Scooter" by minor-league teammate Billy Hitchcock for his darting style afoot, he later became a beloved Yankees broadcaster famed for "Holy cow!" The Yankees retired his No. 10 in 1985, and the Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1994. This high-number card carries an uncorrected wrong birth date on the back.

Variations & how to tell them apart
High Number (#161-210)
Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
Card-back note
Uncorrected error on the back: Birth date should be Sept. 25, 1917.
