About Ed Lopat

A crafty left-hander signed out of New York City by the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1936, Ed Lopat toiled seven seasons in the minors before reaching the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1944. Traded to the New York Yankees in 1948, he spent eight seasons in the Bronx and finished with the Baltimore Orioles in 1955, going 166-112 with a 3.21 ERA and 859 strikeouts over 12 big-league years. A 1951 All-Star, he led the American League in ERA (2.42) and winning percentage in 1953. Lopat was the third man in the Yankees' "Big Three" rotation with fireballers Allie Reynolds and Vic Raschi, and anchored five straight World Series champions (1949-1953), posting a 4-1 record and 2.60 ERA in Series starts. Because he baffled hitters with an assortment of off-speed pitches thrown with the same motion, he was nicknamed "The Junk Man" (also "Steady Eddie"). The card lists him as "Eddie Lopat."
