About Hank Bauer

A rugged right fielder and decorated Marine, Hank Bauer served 32 months in the Pacific in World War II - earning two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts on Guam and Okinawa - before Yankees scout Danny Menendez signed him. He reached the Bronx in 1948 and spent 1948-1959 with the New York Yankees, then 1960-1961 with the Kansas City Athletics, batting .277 with 164 home runs, 703 RBI, and 1,424 hits over 1,544 games. A three-time All-Star (1952-1954), he played on seven pennant-winning Yankees clubs and won multiple World Series titles, including five straight (1949-1953). In the 1951 Series he broke a tie with a bases-loaded triple in Game 6, then made a sliding catch for the final out; he later set the World Series record with a 17-game hitting streak. Nicknamed "Old Potato Face" for his weathered look, he managed the 1966 Baltimore Orioles to a World Series sweep. This is his high-number card (second series).

Variations & how to tell them apart

High Number (#161-210)

Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
