About Bob Turley

Signed by the St. Louis Browns in 1948 for a $600 bonus, right-hander Bob Turley reached the majors in 1951 and pitched 12 seasons (through 1963) for the Browns/Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, and Boston Red Sox. A three-time All-Star (1954, 1955, 1958) with an overpowering fastball, he led the American League in strikeouts in 1954 and in wins (21) in 1958. That 1958 season was his masterpiece: he won the Cy Young Award (then given to just one pitcher in all of baseball) and was named World Series MVP - the first reliever ever so honored - after throwing a Game 5 shutout to stave off elimination and winning Game 7 in relief as the Yankees rallied from a 3-1 deficit against Milwaukee. He also won a 1956 World Series ring. Nicknamed "Bullet Bob" after Look magazine clocked his fastball at 98 mph, Turley finished 101-85 with a 3.64 ERA and 1,265 strikeouts. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
