About Tom Carroll
Thomas Edward Carroll (September 17, 1936 - September 22, 2021), born in Jamaica, New York, was a right-handed infielder whose card #158 is his rookie card. The Yankees signed the shortstop out of the University of Notre Dame on January 26, 1955 as a "bonus baby," a signing large enough that under the era's bonus rule the club was forced to carry the teenager on its major-league roster for two full seasons. He appeared mostly as a bench player and pinch-runner for New York in 1955-1956 and resurfaced with the Kansas City Athletics in 1959, finishing with a .300 batting average over 64 games but only 30 career at-bats, no home runs, and one RBI. His signature moment came in the 1955 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers: used twice as a pinch-runner, he remains the youngest Yankee ever to appear in a World Series game (19 years old in Game 1). Carroll left baseball after 1960, graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame in 1961, and went on to a long career as a CIA operations officer serving in U.S. embassies overseas.
