About Steve Kraly
Steve Charles "Lefty" Kraly, born April 18, 1929, in Whiting, Indiana (d. 2016), was a left-handed pitcher signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1949. A workhorse in the farm system, he roomed with a young Mickey Mantle at Joplin (18-6) and dominated the Eastern League in 1953, going 19-2 in 22 starts for the Binghamton Triplets before earning a call-up. He made his major-league debut on August 9, 1953, but his big-league stay was brief: 5 appearances, a 0-2 record, and a 3.24 ERA over 25 innings, all with the 1953 Yankees. Though injuries kept him off the mound in that fall's World Series (he was slated for Game 5), he collected a championship ring as a member of the title roster. This is his rookie card; as the checklist notes, the printed birth year is an error (it should read 1929). Kraly settled in the Binghamton area, later serving as the local minor-league team's official scorer from 1992 to 2014.
