About Bob Grim

A New York City native, right-hander Bob Grim signed with the Yankees out of high school in June 1948 and climbed through the minors (16-5 at Binghamton in 1951) before two years in the Marines during the Korean War. He debuted in 1954 and pitched eight major-league seasons (1954-1962), mainly with New York (1954-1958) and later the Kansas City Athletics, Indians, Reds and Cardinals. His rookie card here celebrates a sensational 1954: he went 20-6 with a 3.26 ERA and won the AL Rookie of the Year Award, becoming the first Yankee rookie to win 20 games since Russ Ford in 1910. Arm trouble the next season, which he blamed on his slider, limited him thereafter, though he was a 1957 All-Star, led the AL in saves that year, and earned a 1956 World Series ring. In Game 4 of the 1957 Series he surrendered Eddie Mathews's 10th-inning walk-off homer. Grim finished 61-41 with a 3.61 ERA and 443 strikeouts. He died in 1996 of a heart attack while throwing snowballs with neighborhood children.
