About Andy Carey
Andrew Arthur Carey (born Andrew Hexem in Oakland, California, 1931; died 2011) was a right-handed third baseman signed by the New York Yankees in 1951 for a then-record $60,000 bonus after starring at Alameda High and St. Mary's College and playing semipro ball in Idaho. He debuted in 1952 and spent 11 major-league seasons, most (1952-1960) with the Yankees before finishing with the Kansas City Athletics, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers through 1962. His best year came in 1954, when he hit .302 with 65 RBI as New York's regular third baseman; in 1955 he led the American League with 11 triples. Carey batted .260 with 741 hits, 64 home runs, and 350 RBI over 938 games, and was a two-time World Series champion (1956, 1958). His signature moment came in Don Larsen's 1956 World Series perfect game, where he made two key defensive plays, deflecting a Jackie Robinson liner to Gil McDougald and snaring a low drive off Gil Hodges' bat. After baseball he became a Los Angeles stockbroker.
