About Bill Skowron
A powerful right-handed first baseman, Bill "Moose" Skowron attended Purdue on a football scholarship but starred in baseball, hitting .500 as a 1950 sophomore for a Big Ten record that stood roughly a decade before the New York Yankees signed him that September (scout Lou Maguolo). He reached the majors in 1954 and played 14 seasons (1954-1967) for the Yankees (1954-62), Los Angeles Dodgers (1963), Washington Senators (1964), Chicago White Sox (1964-67), and California Angels (1967). An eight-time All-Star, Skowron won five World Series titles - four with the Yankees (1956, 1958, 1961, 1962) and one with the 1963 Dodgers, who swept his old club while he led them at the plate; his three-run homer in Game 7 of the 1958 Series capped a Yankees comeback. He batted .282 with 211 home runs and 888 RBI, and hit .293 in World Series play. His nickname came from a boyhood haircut his grandfather gave him that recalled Mussolini - shortened by friends to "Moose." Fittingly for a set full of errors, this card's back lists his birth as 12/30/1928; he was actually born December 18, 1930 (d. 2012).
