About Joe Collins
Born Joseph Edward Kollonige in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1922, Joe Collins was spotted playing semipro ball around Minooka by a Yankees bird-dog scout and signed into the organization, climbing through nine minor-league seasons before debuting for New York on September 25, 1948. A left-handed-hitting first baseman, he was the Yankees' regular at the position from 1952 through 1954 and spent his entire 10-year career (1948-1957) in pinstripes, batting .256 with 86 home runs and 329 RBI over 908 games. Collins appeared in seven World Series and won five championships (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1956). He is best remembered for his clutch October power: he hit four World Series home runs, including two off Brooklyn's Don Newcombe in Game 1 of the 1955 Series. Constantly tinkering at the plate, he was nicknamed "Old 97" after teammates joked he had 97 different batting stances. Rather than report to Philadelphia after a 1958 trade, he chose to retire a lifelong Yankee.
