About Thornton Kipper

Thornton John Kipper was a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher from Bagley, Wisconsin (born September 27, 1928; died March 29, 2006). He starred at the University of Wisconsin after a stint in the U.S. Navy, going 11-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Big Ten and winning two games at the 1950 College World Series before the Philadelphia Phillies signed him upon his graduation. Kipper reached the majors with the Phillies on June 7, 1953, and spent his entire three-season big-league career (1953-1955) in Philadelphia, working mostly out of the bullpen. Over 55 appearances (three starts) and 99 innings he went 3-4 with a 5.27 ERA, 35 strikeouts, and one save. This 1955 Topps card comes in his final major-league season; after his playing days he ran a pizza business in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was later inducted into the University of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
